According to the latest reports, it appears that Porsche is currently working on a new four-cylinder petrol engine which will be used on the company’s upcoming baby roadster. Still, the engine will also be used on the Boxster, Cayman and potentially even the 911, the firm has confirmed. R&D Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed at the Detroit Auto Show that the company is indeed working on a four-cylinder boxer engine and that this new engine can be applied to the four-cylinder boxer engine. Sources say that the motor is 2.5-liter and delivers a total output of around 360 hp in turbocharged form.

Durheimer admitted that the new engine could be applied if necessary to the 911. “Our decision is, on the 911 side, we’ll stay with the flat [six]. But there are opportunities for the future” he added for Autocar. For those who don’t know, Audi currently uses a powerful 2.5-liter engine on the Audi TT-RS. Still, this is a 5-cylinder engine and it delivers 340 hp. It can push the Audi TT-RS to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). The powerplant comes with a fuel economy rating of 9.2 liters/100km for the TT-RS coupe and 9.5liters/100km for the TT-RS roadster.
