Porsche could bring back the classic two-seater race car 550 Spyder which could be more inexpensive than the Boxster, according to CEO Matthias Mueller in an interview. As cited by the daily Handelsblatt, Mueller said that he could imagine that a modern variant of the popular “James Dean” Porsche would be well-received by customers. He also said that any new variant would not be a retro model, according to Reuters.

Previously, Mueller said to Automotive News Europe that the company is studying whether to launch a small mid-engine sports vehicle as part of its product expansion plans while it seeks to increase global sales to more than 200,000 units annually by 2018, an increase from 97,000 in 2010.
